The extras that quietly add up

None of these are essential on day one, but here's what people commonly add in the first season:

• Thermal kit (£199–£249): an insulated liner that makes spring and autumn camping far more comfortable.
• Mattress topper (£99–£159): the single most popular comfort upgrade.

Second, insurance: some insurers ask you to declare permanently fitted roof accessories, so it's worth a quick call to yours, rules vary by policy, and this isn't financial advice, so always check your own cover. Third, campsite fees: unlike a campervan, a roof tent car parks anywhere a car does, and pitches for car-plus-tent are usually the cheapest category, commonly £15–£35 a night in Cornwall in high season.
